The Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS) is a lightweight synthetic wall cladding that includes foam insulation and thin synthetic coatings.
EIFS is popular in new construction and also can be installed on existing walls, called "retrofitting", to upgrade the appearance and provide insulation, without affecting the activities indoors during the renovation.
EIFS has a number of features that contribute to its popularity including it's, modern seamless look, flexibility of design and high energy efficiency. Typically up to 4" of insulation can be added to a building. This adds an R-Value rating of 15.4, which is significant considering a typical 2X4 wall has an R-Value rating of 12 and a 2x6 wall has a rating of 20.
